College GPA Does It Really Matter
School GPA Does It Really Matter Going crazy about your GPA? Without a doubt, youââ¬â¢ve been told as long as you can remember that evaluations are the distinction between turning into a tycoon and having a deep rooted profession at Taco Bell. As an understudy, that thought is underlined significantly more, with numerous imperative courses for your degree having explicit GPA prerequisites. As the finish of the semester draws near, you might be spending restless evenings agonizing over whether you did what's needed to get your GPA to that mogul level or on the off chance that you should simply figure out how to make an exceptional Mexican Pizza. Luckily, your GPA isnââ¬â¢t all that itââ¬â¢s supposed to be. Truth be told, there are a few genuine reasons why your evaluations arenââ¬â¢t the end-all be-the entirety of your school understanding. Simply investigate these realities and measurements about GPA and you might have the option to loosen up enough to keep your present evaluation level in context. 60-70% of HR enrollment specialists believe that GPA is significant OK, so GPA is significant. Indeed, when youââ¬â¢re searching for an occupation after school, a dominant part of employing chiefs will need to see a GPA above 3.0. In any case, on the off chance that you havenââ¬â¢t met that mysterious discretionary number, donââ¬â¢t stress. An entire 30-40% of organizations donââ¬â¢t even gander at GPA. Rather, theyââ¬â¢ll be intrigued to perceive what sorts of extracurricular, network, and volunteer encounters youââ¬â¢ve had. 43% of letter grades given are Aââ¬â¢s In an ongoing report from Teacherââ¬â¢s College Record, practically 50% of all evaluations that are given are Aââ¬â¢s. This implies getting a 4.0 truly doesnââ¬â¢t mean what it used to. Numerous businesses know this and comprehend that being acceptable at kissing the teacherââ¬â¢s butt doesnââ¬â¢t essentially imply that an individual is more intelligent or increasingly qualified. Bunches of compelling associations like Google and America donââ¬â¢t care about GPA Lazlo Bock, the Senior VP of People Operations for Google said in a New York Times talk with, ââ¬Å"GPAââ¬â¢s are a useless measures for employing, and grades are worthlessâ⬠¦We discovered that they donââ¬â¢t anticipate anything.â⬠This is ending up being a truly important hypothesis, with numerous CEOs, business pioneers, and even presidentââ¬â¢s not flaunting high GPAââ¬â¢s. Recall what George W. Hedge stated: ââ¬Å"To all the C-understudies: I state, you also can be leader of the United States.â⬠45% of school dropouts leave school with a GPA somewhere in the range of 2.0 and 3.0 The strain to get passing marks and keep them can be so overpowering for certain understudies that it will push them out of school inside and out. Itââ¬â¢s about how understudies see their prosperity. As indicated by inquire about from the Education Advisory Board (EAB), understudies who have a blend of Bââ¬â¢s and Cââ¬â¢s are bound to remain in school than those with a blend of Aââ¬â¢s and Fââ¬â¢s. In spite of their equivalent potential, concentrating on ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠evaluations can really be an impediment to progress. Individuals not worried about GPA will in general have higher GPAââ¬â¢s In a little report led at Cal State San Marcos, analysts found that understudies who were generally worried about GPA were bound to have lower ones. While this could be because of some studentsââ¬â¢ trust in their capacities, it could likewise be that an absence of worry about evaluations helped them to improve on tests and normally expanded their scores. Your GPA may rely upon your character Despite the fact that everybody needs to step through examinations, there is a sure gathering of individuals who appear to exceed expectations normally with regards to knocking up their GPA. In an investigation done at Rice University, understudies who were considered ââ¬Å"conscientiousâ⬠(trained and objective situated) had higher GPAââ¬â¢s in general. That implies GPAââ¬â¢s may work admirably characterizing the work capacity of particular sorts of understudies, however totally miss the characteristics of understudies who are progressively laid back and individuals arranged. 51% of MBA programs ding applications dependent on GPA Albeit 51% appears to be a high number, itââ¬â¢s really something to be thankful for. This means, while over portion of MBA programs consider GPA to be in pointer of accomplishment, practically half feel that itââ¬â¢s not a serious deal. So relying upon your program of decision, GPA can either be an impediment or a non-issue. Schools with harder evaluating approaches produce practically 60% less fruitful MBA candidates Schools who take an interest in grade expansion may not be as genuine as others, yet they have more understudies who are acknowledged into post-graduate projects. Truth be told, inquire about distributed in PLOS One indicated that understudies from schools with tough evaluating approaches (i.e., they just gave out 10% Aââ¬â¢s) had just 12% of their applicantââ¬â¢s acknowledged. Schools with expanded evaluations were acknowledged 72% of the time â⬠frequently in light of the fact that the school being referred to was viewed as esteemed. Essentially, itââ¬â¢s critical to give a valiant effort in school â⬠yet donââ¬â¢t put a lot of accentuation on your GPA. Rather than worrying about how you can get that A+ as opposed to An, emphasis on the extra worth you can bring to your school and vocation. An individual who has demonstrated to be an imaginative, inventive self-starter will be significantly more appealing than a super-brilliant individual who just realizes how to step through an examination. Hows your GPA doing? Is it true that you are stressed over your evaluations right now? Do you have some GPA achievement equation? Reveal to us more, dont be timid!

Analysis of English Grammar Synthesis Case Study
Investigation of English Grammar Synthesis - Case Study Example All through evaluation school, the idea of legitimate English is bored into the leaders of each understudy, yet in the wake of perusing the primary section of Understanding English Grammar by Marsha Kolln and Robert Funk, the idea currently bodes well. Syntax is a major piece of the English language, which comes to a long ways past setting a comma in its right spot. This basic bit of our language helps in understanding the reasons why sentences are shaped in the manner that they are. This specialized part of English assists with making a precise arrangement of standard procedures for every single understudy to follow, regardless of what locale, so as to be fruitful in the realm of formal English. Sentence structure is instructed from youth the country over. Notwithstanding, there are various implications to this premise of the English language. The first is that everybody has an alternate arrangement of sentence structure rules relying upon where they originate from. The subsequent d efinition comes from the etymological science branch which contemplates the conventions related with punctuation. The conventions of sentences, also called their language structure, are examined in this importance. The last meaning of language alludes to the real utilization of the term and what is regarded to be appropriate and ill-advised sentence structure. These three definitions help feature the assortments and challenges that many have with standard syntax. The organization for the introduction of sentence structure in school goes back to the Middle Ages and the eight pieces of Latin discourse. Initially, Latin was believed to be the predominant language, consequently, when researchers made the standards of English sentence structure, they put together it with respect to this unrivaled language. John Locke, an English thinker, expressed that it was significant ââ¬Å"to show Men not to talk, however to talk correctlyâ⬠(Kolln and Funk, 2012, p. 5) and to use the language decides that had been gone ahead by earlier erudite people. This perspective on the language, called prescriptive syntax, is customarily instructed in schools so as to set up information on the sentence structure skeleton. In later occasions spellbinding language structure has gotten progressively well known among etymologists, which is the acknowledgment of regionalism as a kind of standard notwithstanding formal composed English. With the various definitions come the contentions and contrasts in what is viewed as right language structure or if right syntax even exists. Regionalisms have become a kind of acknowledged method of sentence structure because of the three wide meanings of this language work. Present day etymologists found that the issue of ignoring engaging sentence structure was that whole language could be lost.

Using Reflexive Verbs in Spanish
A verb is used reflexively when the subject of the verb is also its object. An example of a simple sentence using a reflexive verb is Pedro se lava (Pedro is washing himself). In that sentence Pedro is both the subject (the one doing the washing) and the object (the person begin washed). Note that the reflexive pronoun (in this case se) typically precedes the verb (although it can be attached to infinitives). Key Takeaways: Spanish Reflexive Verbs The subject and object of a reflexive verb is the same. For example: She is watching herself in the mirror. Not all Spanish reflexive verbs are translated as reflexive in English.Reflexive verbs can be used for emphasis or to avoid saying who is performing the verbs action. Here are the main ways such verbs are used: Verb's Subject Acting on Itself As in the example above, this is the most straightforward use of reflexive verbs, and it is certainly the most common way they are used in English. In plural form the pronoun can often be translated as themselves or each other, depending on the context. Some examples: Puedo verme en el espejo. (I can see myself in the mirror.)à ¿Quà © te compraste? (What did you buy for yourself?)Se estaban admirando. (They were admiring themselves. Or, they were admiring each other.)Pablo se habla. (Pablo talks to himself.) Verbs Used Only in Reflexive Form Some verbs in Spanish are used only in the reflexive form, and they may or may not be translated to English using a reflexive construction. In dictionaries, such verbs traditionally are listed with a se at the end of the infinitive, as in abstenerse, which means to abstain. Me abstengo de votar. (I am abstaining from voting.)Teresa se arrepentià ³ de sus errors. (Teresa regretted her errors.)Me resigno a no tener dinero. (I am resigning myself to having no money.) Reflexive Verbs Translated as Nonreflexive Verbs Some Spanish verbs make perfect sense when understood in a reflexive way, but we typically dont translate them that way into English. For example, levantar means to lift, while its reflexive counterpart, levantarse, could be understood to mean to lift oneself, but is usually translated as to get up. Quiero baà ±arme. (I want to take a bath. Literally, I want to bathe myself.)à ¡Sià ©ntate! (Sit down! Literally, seat yourself!)Voy a vestirme. (I am going to get dressed. Literally, I am going to dress myself.)Me afeito cada maà ±ana. (I shave every morning. Literally, I shave myself every morning.)Patricia se acercà ³ la casa. (Patricia approached the house. Literally, Patricia brought herself closer to the house.)Se llama Eva. (Her name is Eva. Literally, she calls herself Eva.) Verbs Changing Meaning in Reflexive Form Making a verb reflexive can change its meaning in ways that arent always predictable. Sometimes the difference in meaning is subtle. Following are some common examples; not all possible meanings of the verbs are included. abonar, to pay money; abonarse, to subscribe (as to a periodical)abrir, to open; abrirse, to open up (in the sense of confiding in someone)acordar, to agree, to decide; acordarse, to rememberacusar, to accuse; acusarse, to confesscallar, to be quiet; callarse, to become quietcerrar, to close; cerrarse, to close oneself off emotionallycombinar, to combine; combinarse (plural forms), to take turnsdormir, to sleep; dormirse, to fall asleepir, to go; irse, to go awayllevar, to carry; llevarse, to take awayponer, to put; ponerse, to put on, to wearsalir, to leave; salirse, to leave unexpectedly, to leak Reflexive Verbs for Emphasis Some verbs can be used reflexively to add emphasis. The distinction isnt always readily translated to English. For example, comà la hamburguesa, means I ate the hamburger, but the reflexive form, me comà la hamburguesa, could be translated the same way, or perhaps as I ate up the hamburger or I ate the whole hamburger. Similarly, pià ©nsalo might be translated as think about it, whereas pià ©nsatelo might be translated the same way or as think about it thoroughly. The 'Reflexive Passive' Often, particularly with inanimate objects, the reflexive form is used to indicate an occurrence without indicating the person or thing responsible for that occurrence. Such uses of the reflexive are typically the equivalent of passive verb forms in English, as in the following examples: Se cerraron las puertas. (The doors were closed.)Se habla espaà ±ol aquà . (Spanish is spoken here.)Se venden recuerdos. (Souvenirs are sold, or souvenirs for sale.) Reflexive Forms for Emotional Reactions Emotional reactions are often indicated by reflexive verb forms. For example, enojar means to anger. In the reflexive form, enojarse means to become angry or to be angry. Thus, se enoja contra su amigo could be used to say, he gets angry at his friend. Among the many verbs used in such a way are aburrirse, to be bored; alegrarse, to be happy; dolerse, to be hurt; emocionarse, to be excited; horrizarse, to be horrified; and sorprenderse, to be surprised.

The Absolute And Constitutional Governments During The...
During the seventeenth century Europe witnessed two prominent forms of government, an absolutist and a limited/constitutional. Both governments were constructed through several key figures that were in control of the countries, some more stable than others. Although these key figures tried to dominate the government under absolute authority their control was still limited. Absolutists monarchies were trying to be established all over the country, unfortunately many of them failed due to various factors. Throughout the seventeenth century Europe rulers have tried to maintain an absolutist monarchy however society still found some holes in their power, which limited the rulerââ¬â¢s control. The absolute and constitutional governments were two very different governments in practice, but also maintained similar characteristics in both systems of government. The differences between both governments emerged during the sixteenth and seventeenth century when Europeans began to exper iment with absolutism and constitution monarchies. An absolute monarchy can be defined as the monarch, king or queen, holds the supreme or absolute powers and rule is based on divine right. In other words, the king received their power from God, so he only had to answer to God not parliament. The king is entitled to make all economic and other state related decisions for the country, while the prime minister exercises effective political power. Atlantic Slave Trade Free Essays
The Atlantic trade, popularly known as the triangular or transatlantic trade, began in the 15th century. It became more popular when a peculiar but well paying commodity replaced gold. This was slave trade and its popularity increased in the 17th and 18th century. We will write a custom essay sample on Atlantic Slave Trade or any similar topic only for you Order Now The explosive slave trade emanated from an insatiable need for a work force in European empires. The names triangular and transatlantic trades come from the shape it made on the map (Evans, 2010). Atlantic Slave Trade Course In the European perspective, slavery was the best business they ever did around the 17th and 18th century. Many ships docked at her harbors loaded with slaves who were the most profitable commodity. They boosted her economy to great heights. The slave trade formed a trade route that was most profitable; the Atlantic slave trade. The tradeââ¬â¢s organization was a triangle where the following took place; Ships left Europe for Africa with trade goods, which were exchanged with slaves. The ships would then head to America with the slaves and sell them there. The ships would then return to Europe with agricultural products such as rum, sugar, cotton, and tobacco (See attached image) (Mbamara, 2006). Africans were the best workforce since they were immune to many tropical diseases. They were also experienced in the jobs the Europeans had for them. These involved cattle keeping, and agriculture. They were also accustomed to hard labor. This made the trade grow, as the Europeans required them in large numbers. The transatlantic trade was most important to the Europeans since every stop translated into huge profits. Slave trade was clearly immoral but the profits it came with subdued these concerns. Some of the activities the slaves carried out included sugar production, mining, as well as the harvesting of tobacco, cotton, and coffee. (Mbamara, 2006). Africans on the other hand were into this thriving trade whereby they sold their own. They however made it hard for the Europeans to penetrate their land as they had erected a military power. The Europeans on the other hand feared penetrating Africa as they feared the tropical diseases. There existed African merchants who were contracted by the Europeans to get them slaves from the interior. The coast had few slaves and Europeans had to spend months trying to get enough slaves for their shiploads (Klein, 2010). The Africans put barriers and this left the Europeans with no choice but peaceful trade. The Africans went ahead to hike their demands on the Europeans. They introduced local taxes for anyone who wished to purchase slaves. This way, they were in full control of their market. This forced the Europeans to cough up to à £375 per ship and only then would they be permitted to trade. This amount covered a royal tax, pay for royal officials and interpreters. They then had to pay an exportation tax. These taxes were subject to fluctuations in demand and supply. Africans capitalized on this trade by selling water and other supplies to the Europeans who would spend months at the coast negotiating for the slaves. The largest numbers of slaves were provided by the Whydah and the Dahomey (Klein, 2010). In 1807, a law to abolish slave trade in Britain and other powers involved in the trade was passed. By 1833, all slaves had been emancipated and sent back to their homelands. In 1815, France withdrew from slave trade and other powers followed suit. Around the 19th century, the Atlantic slave trade had diminished. Historians speculate that the economic factors that led to the decline of the slave trade are that the plantations they worked in had become unproductive economically. They also feel that may be Britain had made enough money and was thus becoming independent. This may have made slave trade less appealing to the home economy (Hardy, 2005). Conclusion The transatlantic slave trade was beneficial to both the Europeans and the Africans chiefs and kings. The Europeans got a work force for their plantations and mines. They also benefited from agricultural products from America. The African royalties got revenue out of the slaves they sold. The decline of the transatlantic trade is partially attributed to abolishment of slave trade and economic incentives. However, the slave trade was demeaning to the human race and it is a great thing to scrap it off regardless of the reasons behind it. How to cite Atlantic Slave Trade, Papers

Tourism Essay Example Cultural Tourism Impact
Cultural Tourism Impact Cultural tourism embraces the experiences of visitors to a destination as they experience the heritage, lifestyle, art, and the people on a first hand basis. Different tourist destinations have different, authentic products such as their heritage, lifestyle, and industrial activities that reflect their cultures thus attract visitors to them (McKercher and DuCros, 2002). Cultural tourism in China and the UK occurs on significant levels, and this paper intents to look at the impact of cultural tourism on the local society as well as the countries as a whole. There has been an increase in the promotion of cultural tourism to enhance its growth, thus generating income for the destination countries and local communities. This research aims at investigating and critically analyzing both negative and positive impacts of cultural tourism to the local society of destination countries, which in this case, are China and the UK. In addition, it will also look at the motivation of tourism with regards to cultural perspectives, and how key stakeholders perceive cultural tourism. A critical review of the impacts of cultural tourism could enable a researcher to come up with recommendations to enhance the state of cultural tourism in local society and destination countries. The recommendations will mainly focus on the key players in society such as policy makers, government authorities, and society and educational institutions. In this way, they will be able to devise ways that can boost the performance of cultural tourism in their respective areas. China and the UK have varying foundations of cultural tourism. China has authentic cultural destinations that have been in existence for a while. One of the key contributors the cultural tourism is ethnic minorities of the local communities (Cross, 2010). On the other hand, the UK has a developmental approach to cultural tourism. This is because most tourist destinations in the UK have adopted a cultural incline so as to increase tourist attraction in the country. The success Liverpool as the European Capital of Culture since 2008 was an enormous boost to the development of Cultural Tourism in the UK (Williams, 2010). The best way to identify the differences in cultural tourism between China and the UK is by the use of mixed methods research. This will involve using both qualitative and quantitative means of data collection and analysis. These methods include the grounded theory approach of qualitative approach and the descriptive-correlation approach of quantitative analysis. Most of the data for this research can be extracted from secondary data sources which include reviews of previous research done by other researchers. Such sources can provide useful information about the state of cultural tourism in both China and UK, and a comprehensive compilation of such sources can lead to significant deductions about the differences between the two countries. Cultural tourism entails a combination of various factors found in the tourist destinations that determine the inflow of visitors. Most of these determinants in China and the UK include architecture, art, heritage sites, and even the lifestyle of the ethnic populations. Once the policy makers and planners become aware of these determinants, they can develop way conserve the cultural heritage in order to attract many tourists. Consequently, they will increase income generation via the tourist industry thus improve the economic status of the local communities and the destination countries (Kolas, 2008). References Cross, B. Free Essays on Youngs Two-slit Experiment
The two-slit experiment had, and still preserves a fundamental impact on modern physics. In his Lectures on Physics, Feynman stated that the interference patterns seen in Youngââ¬â¢s experiment are ââ¬Å"a phenomenon which is impossible, absolutely impossible to explain in any classical way, and which has in it the heart of quantum mechanics. In reality it contains the only mystery.â⬠[1] Here, he is expressing the wonder of wave-particle duality, in which matter at an atomic level behaves at times like a particle and at others, like a wave. However, observations of both qualities at the same time are impermissible for some reason by the laws of quantum mechanics. Within the two-slit experiment, there are numerous aspects that defy logic and maintain the mystery that is quantum physics. The experiment itself works by emitting photons of light from a monochromatic source to pass through a single slit to obtain a narrow beam of light. This narrow beam is then allowed to fall on a screen containing two narrow slits. Light from the two slits then falls on a distant screen. The resulting patterns of light on the screen can then be observed. What Young found was that a central bright maximum of light was obtained, and around this central bright maximum were equidistant striations of light and dark. To clarify one point, it was later discovered that if a single photon were fired at the two slits, an interference pattern would not appear. Rather, a single 'blip' would appear on the screen, which indicates that the photon is not a wave, but rather a particle. If a large number of photons were fired at the slits, an interference pattern would begin to a ppear. So it seems that photons are really particles that behave collectively like waves. The same reasoning applies to all particles, not just photons. Many variations of the Young two-slit experiment have since arisen, namely gedankens (thought experiments), to illustrate the fundamental princi... Whether shes showing us how to get the perfect resume at Resume Writing Academy or leading thinkers on the cutting edge of recruiting and hiring at Career Thought Leaders, you wont find anyone whos more focused on careers. Wendy talked with us about finding an executive role in the modern day. When someone is looking to step into an executive role, whats the first thing they should do?Determine whether or not they have the requisite skills, qualifications and credentials for the positions they are targeting. If not, they should determine the best place to acquire those skills either through employment or an educational program. No need to apply if youre not yet qualified. Equally important is finding an executive mentor or sponsor who can work with you to promote your candidacy to the company and/or position that youre targeting. How does finding an executive role differ from finding another job?Savvy executives who are seeking new opportunities should engage in high-level job search activities, including online networking, in-person networking, blogging, target company outreach, recruiter outreach and direct mail/email. They might also respond to specific online job postings, although that should not be the crux of their search campaign, as its the least effective way to find a new position. Most other job seekers should engage in as many of these activities as are relevant to their career objectives. Perhaps the most significant difference is that executive job searches generally take longer since there are less positions available, the competition can be fierce and the hiring process itself takes a great deal of time.If an employer needs to fill an executive position, where should they start looking? Some employers will reach out to executive recruiters to handle the task of recruiting new management and leadership. Although the price tag is high, recruiters will find the candidates of choice and presen t them to the company. Alternative strategies, which can be just as effective and much less costly, include using LinkedIn to identify and connect with qualified candidates, searching groups of interest to the companys industry or profession to find group members with the qualifications the hiring company is seeking, creating a Facebook page and Twitter account to attract quality candidates to the company, and networking with company personnel, suppliers, business partners and others who know the people that they may want to hire. How important is the resume to finding an executive position, and why?The resume is any professionals calling card, giving enough important information and sharing the right achievements and success stories to entice the hiring company to invite the candidate for an interview. Just as important in todays world of online job search is the LinkedIn profile. In fact, LinkedIn can be more important when a company is doing their initial sourcing; then, the resum e comes into play after the candidate has been identified on LinkedIn, which is the primary social media platform for executives. What do you wish everyone knew about writing a resume? The most important thing to know about resume writing is that youre writing to the futureto the position and industry that youre targeting. Resumes are NOT autobiographical essays of everything youve done throughout your entire career. Rather, theyre career marketing communications designed to sell your distinctive qualifications, experiences, achievements, educational credentials and more. Resumes are the appetizers; candidates are the main course (once they get an interview)! What trends in executive hiring should we be watching for in the future?Perhaps the greatest trend will be in the specificity of expertise. Companies want to hire executives with very specific expertise in their industry, product or technology executives who can solve problems and overcome challenges, executives who can optimize opportunities and deliver results by leveraging what theyve already accomplished and who they know. And companies want virtually immediate results. They dont want the plan that will turnaround the business in two years; they want the turnaround now.

News Media Comparison Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
News Media Comparison - Assignment Example o curb the effects of these chemicals on the environment, companies involved in these mining prospects have created lakes where this water is collected and recycled (Bisset, n. p.). Recycling requires extra time and resources, which these companies try to minimize by storing the waste chemicals in lakes. Most of the flow back is pumped into exhausted wells, but it is mostly liked to leach to aquifers and surface waters. Fracking might disrupt radioactive elements and gases that might leach up to the surface and harm people and environment (Dembicki, n. p.). Corporate media like the CTV Newsââ¬â¢ report that the benefits of natural gas shale mining through the Fracking methodââ¬â¢s advantages outweigh the disadvantages. This is in terms of job creation, consistent and steady supply of natural gas for next 100 years, and the income it will generate in terms of savings accrued from expenditure on fuel imports (Bisset, n. p.). The minister, for energy and mines, is quoted advocatin g for natural gas mining using the Fracking process, saying that all it requires is gradual integration of both conservative and avant-garde approaches to both environmental protection and the economic potential of natural gas shale mining (Bisset, n. p.). The framing of the news lays emphasis on the positive impact of the proposed and continued natural gas mining prospects are going to have a long lasting effect on the economies and lives of the people (Krugel, n. p.). This brings to fore the argument that is forwarded by those who are advocating for the continued exploration and mining of natural gas. Their arguments are focused on improving the livelihoods through the creation and acquisition of jobs, and how these mining ventures help in improving the ailing economies of towns and provinces where... This essay approves that alternative media provides complimentary information to that provided by the mainstream media or corporate media. It does this by being different in their delivery of information through varying dimensions of content, models of production, distribution, dynamic artistry and target audience integration. Alternative mediaââ¬â¢s main objective is to mitigate the effects of existing authorities, like governments and corporations that run the mainstream media, by representing the plight of the marginalized, in society. Although both types of media are bias, alternative media claims that its bias is different from that of corporate media because of their values and overall objective of agitating for the common manââ¬â¢s well being. This paper aims at comparing these two types of media by analysing how they handle a specific current issue in Canada. This report makes a conclusion that the focus on the negative environmental impacts of Fracking, in Canada, is not highlighted as much as it should, but the only mention of the environment is what the government will do, and measures it intends put, in place. There is no mention of what people should do to protect themselves against the harmful effects associated with frack mining. The sources used, in their reporting on this issue, are those that are benefitting from the ongoing mining operations because all their expositions, on the matter, are focused on the positives associated with continued mining activities without focusing on the effects of mining on the environment. Sources from the ministry of environment that would have highlighted the plight of sensitive ecosystems at risk of destruction and its contribution to global warming are not included in their articles.

Careful, He Might Hear You :: essays research papers
Careful He Might Hear You, by Sumner Locke Elliot, is a complicated novel, revolving around the story of a six year old boy named PS and his search for personal identity amidst the conflicts of his closest relatives. The narration of these conflicts, as well as the history behind their origins, forms the basis of the novel, and while the different types of relationships between the characters are not the main focus of the novel, the author links them with each of the charactersââ¬â¢ sense of identity and their personal desires. Careful He Might Hear You is a book about people finding their true identities, and the truth or imbalance of the relationships that result from this. Through comparison and contrast, Sumner Locke Elliot highlights the flaws in each of the relationships presented, and the ramifications these have on the individuals involved; their present lives and their probable futures. The first significant relationship presented in the novel is that between PS and his Aunt Lila and Uncle George. PS sees himself solely as Lila and Georgeââ¬â¢s child and this perception that he has on himself directly influences the nature of his relationship with them. Being a six year old child yet to develop his own personal sense of identity, PS trusts implicitly in Lila and George and believes, in his innocent naive way, that they will always do what is best for him. This is not so much carelessness on PSââ¬â¢s part, as an ignorance of any other type of upbringing and love than that administered to him by Lila and George. His unawareness of the outside world and any other style of life but his own causes the power of their relationship to be solely in the hands of Lila. PSââ¬â¢s innocence and trust in Lila becomes one of the major contributors to the clash which develops between Vanessa and Lila once Vanessa takes partial custody of PS. The nature of the relationship Vanessa demands from PS is so entirely different to that of Lila that PS finds himself torn between two women who, with their secrets, lies and constant quests for the upper hand, disrupt his own sense of personal well-being and security. This inner disquiet and uncertainty causes PS to change, and the nature of the relationships he hold with both his Aunts changes with this. These changes run parallel to PSââ¬â¢s emerging sense of identity, and the highlight, in the end, how important it is to be sure of who one is and what one wants in order for oneââ¬â¢s relationship with other people to work.

Cost Leadership- Cost Leadership is a way of getting a competitive advantage by finding the most efficient way of manufacturing the good or delivering the service in the industry. A cost leadership strategy is where a business aims to be the lowest cost manufacturer within its industry. Low costs can be achieved through economies of scale in production and distribution, access to cheaper raw materials or inventing an innovative way of producing a product. Visibility- Operations can be influenced with something such as what they can see from the operations in action. Service based businesses will have a higher based level of visibility, while customers will rarely see the operations process of a manufacturing based business. The implications for operations of a highly visible operations process are that the quality of labour will be significant. Operations will generally need to have well trained, highly skilled, adaptable staff that are able and willing to deal with the individual needs of customers. A close relationship with human resource will be essential. Speed is also a crucial factor in operations as customers usually have a much lower tolerance for waiting. Short time lags are important in operations between the customer ordering and the delivery. Otherwise the customer may get sick of waiting and move onto a competitor. Quality expectations A business that is customer focussed will try to produce goods and services that will satisfy the desires of its customers. Customers always have their own idea of how a product should be and what quality it should be at. The business must keep their intentions in mind. An example of this would be at JB HIFI. This is an approach of having good customer service from the staff showing off the product to the interested customer. An example of this is at Athletes foot. It is the ability to maintain the qualities that are values in the physical environment. ââ¬â Climate chance, Water, Waste etc. Quality Assurance Quality assurance involves establishing and using a set of procedures and/or processes that will prevent product defects from occurring in delivering services. Global factors There are a number of global factors that influence operations strategies. They include global sourcing, economies of scale, scanning and learning and research and development. Global sourcing is where products are acquired outside the home country and are bought from overseas for cheaper sales. Scanning and Learning This is the competitive global environment within which many large businesses operate which is constantly changing. Technology as an example is changing at a very fast rate. The Song Of A Girl And A Guy Deal With Emotions Essay
When I heard about the song assignment the song I immediately thought of the song Different For Girls and how it would relate to the gender chapter. Country is my all time favorite music genre. I knew there would be many country songs to choose from to fit into the gender chapter. I picked this song because I remember the first time I heard it and thinking it was sad how differently boys and girls deal with problems. Our society today has shown that boys need to act strong with little emotions. This song captures how society has reformed how boys and girls deal with emotions. Dierks Bentleyââ¬â¢s song is describing the difference between how a girl and a guy deal with heartbreak. I can relate to this song because I have been through heartbreak and the guy dealt with it completely differently from me. He should little emotion and acted as if it never mattered. The song reminds me of how society has created these gender roles and to be a man you have to follow them. According to Con ley gender is defined as ââ¬Å"a social position; the set of social arrangements that are built around normative sex categoriesâ⬠(Conley 279). The song is showing that based on your gender this is the way you should act emotionally. The first concept that helps analyze the song is gender roles. Conley states that gender roles are defined as, ââ¬Å" sets of behavioral norms assumed to accompany ones status as a male or femaleâ⬠(Conley 287). New Technology During The Civil War - 1435 Words
Following the Civil War, a second industrial revolution in America brought many changes to the nationââ¬â¢s agriculture sector. The new technologies that were created transformed how farmers worked and the way in which the sector functioned. Agriculture expanded and became more industrial. Meanwhile government policies, or lack of them for a while, and hard economic conditions put difficult strains on farmers and their occupation. These changes in technology, economic conditions, and government policy from 1865 to 1900 transformed and improved agriculture while leaving farmers in hardship. The new technology used in American agriculture made it overall more productive and widespread while creating mixed results for the farmers. The advancement in machines like reapers, threshers, and mowers to harvest grains produced contrasting outcomes. An obvious benefit was some of the ease brought to the farmers. The human labor involved in harvesting grain by hand with a scythe or by a simpl e, one horse-powered machine was far greater than harvesting with a big, multi-horse powered machine. The devices made work simpler, faster, and more efficient for the farmers by relying on animal energy and technology (Document D). With promises of larger crops with less exertion, the new machines became very desirable to farmers in order to stay in competition with their peers; however, buying these machines also pushed many of them into unfortunate financial situations. string(50) " The wolf pup loved her, even if no one else did\." Arya Aryaââ¬â¢s stitches were crooked again. She frowned down at them with dismay and glanced over to where her sister Sansa sat among the other girls. Sansaââ¬â¢s needlework was exquisite. We will write a custom essay sample on A Game of Thrones Chapter Seven or any similar topic only for you Order Now Everyone said so. ââ¬Å"Sansaââ¬â¢s work is as pretty as she is,â⬠Septa Mordane told their lady mother once. ââ¬Å"She has such fine, delicate hands.â⬠When Lady Catelyn had asked about Arya, the septa had sniffed. ââ¬Å"Arya has the hands of a blacksmith.â⬠Arya glanced furtively across the room, worried that Septa Mordane might have read her thoughts, but the septa was paying her no attention today. She was sitting with the Princess Myrcella, all smiles and admiration. It was not often that the septa was privileged to instruct a royal princess in the womanly arts, as she had said when the queen brought Myrcella to join them. Arya thought that Myrcellaââ¬â¢s stitches looked a little crooked too, but you would never know it from the way Septa Mordane was cooing. She studied her own work again, looking for some way to salvage it, then sighed and put down the needle. She looked glumly at her sister. Sansa was chatting away happily as she worked. Beth Cassel, Ser Rodrikââ¬â¢s little girl, was sitting by her feet, listening to every word she said, and Jeyne Poole was leaning over to whisper something in her ear. ââ¬Å"What are you talking about?â⬠Arya asked suddenly. Jeyne gave her a startled look, then giggled. Sansa looked abashed. Beth blushed. No one answered. ââ¬Å"Tell me,â⬠Arya said. Jeyne glanced over to make certain that Septa Mordane was not listening. Myrcella said something then, and the septa laughed along with the rest of the ladies. ââ¬Å"We were talking about the prince,â⬠Sansa said, her voice soft as a kiss. Arya knew which prince she meant: Jofftey, of course. The tall, handsome one. Sansa got to sit with him at the feast. Arya had to sit with the little fat one. Naturally. ââ¬Å"Joffrey likes your sister,â⬠Jeyne whispered, proud as if she had something to do with it. She was the daughter of Winterfellââ¬â¢s steward and Sansaââ¬â¢s dearest friend. ââ¬Å"He told her she was very beautiful.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s going to marry her,â⬠little Beth said dreamily, hugging herself. ââ¬Å"Then Sansa will be queen of all the realm.â⬠Sansa had the grace to blush. She blushed prettily. She did everything prettily, Arya thought with dull resentment. ââ¬Å"Beth, you shouldnââ¬â¢t make up stories,â⬠Sansa corrected the younger girl, gently stroking her hair to take the harshness out of her words. She looked at Arya. ââ¬Å"What did you think of Prince Joff, sister? Heââ¬â¢s very gallant, donââ¬â¢t you think?â⬠ââ¬Å"Jon says he looks like a girl,â⬠Arya said. Sansa sighed as she stitched. ââ¬Å"Poor Jon,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"He gets jealous because heââ¬â¢s a bastard.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s our brother,â⬠Arya said, much too loudly. Her voice cut through the afternoon quiet of the tower room. Septa Mordane raised her eyes. She had a bony face, sharp eyes, and a thin lipless mouth made for frowning. It was frowning now. ââ¬Å"What are you talking about, children?â⬠ââ¬Å"Our half brother,â⬠Sansa corrected, soft and precise. She smiled for the septa. ââ¬Å"Arya and I were remarking on how pleased we were to have the princess with us today,â⬠she said. Septa Mordane nodded. ââ¬Å"Indeed. A great honor for us all.â⬠Princess Myrcella smiled uncertainly at the compliment. ââ¬Å"Arya, why arenââ¬â¢t you at work?â⬠the septa asked. She rose to her feet, starched skirts rustling as she started across the room. ââ¬Å"Let me see your stitches.â⬠Arya wanted to scream. It was just like Sansa to go and attract the septaââ¬â¢s attention. ââ¬Å"Here,â⬠she said, surrendering up her work. The septa examined the fabric. ââ¬Å"Arya, Arya, Arya,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"This will not do. This will not do at all.â⬠Everyone was looking at her. It was too much. Sansa was too well bred to smile at her sisterââ¬â¢s disgrace, but Jeyne was smirking on her behalf. Even Princess Myrcella looked sorry for her. Arya felt tears filling her eyes. She pushed herself out of her chair and bolted for the door. Septa Mordane called after her. ââ¬Å"Arya, come back here! Donââ¬â¢t you take another step! Your lady mother will hear of this. In front of our royal princess too! Youââ¬â¢ll shame us all!â⬠Arya stopped at the door and turned back, biting her lip. The tears were running down her cheeks now. She managed a stiff little bow to Myrcella. ââ¬Å"By your leave, my lady.â⬠Myrcella blinked at her and looked to her ladies for guidance. But if she was uncertain, Septa Mordane was not. ââ¬Å"Just where do you think you are going, Arya?â⬠the septa demanded. Arya glared at her. ââ¬Å"I have to go shoe a horse,â⬠she said sweetly, taking a brief satisfaction in the shock on the septaââ¬â¢s face. Then she whirled and made her exit, running down the steps as fast as her feet would take her. It wasnââ¬â¢t fair. Sansa had everything. Sansa was two years older; maybe by the time Arya had been born, there had been nothing left. Often it felt that way. Sansa could sew and dance and sing. She wrote poetry. She knew how to dress. She played the high harp and the bells. Worse, she was beautiful. Sansa had gotten their motherââ¬â¢s fine high cheekbones and the thick auburn hair of the Tullys. Arya took after their lord father. Her hair was a lusterless brown, and her face was long and solemn. Jeyne used to call her Arya Horseface, and neigh whenever she came near. It hurt that the one thing Arya could do better than her sister was ride a horse. Well, that and manage a household. Sansa had never had much of a head for figures. If she did marry Prince Joff, Arya hoped for his sake that he had a good steward. Nymeria was waiting for her in the guardroom at the base of the stairs. She bounded to her feet as soon as she caught sight of Arya. Arya grinned. The wolf pup loved her, even if no one else did. You read "A Game of Thrones Chapter Seven" in category "Essay examples" They went everywhere together, and Nymeria slept in her room, at the foot of her bed. If Mother had not forbidden it, Arya would gladly have taken the wolf with her to needlework. Let Septa Mordane complain about her stitches then. Nymeria nipped eagerly at her hand as Arya untied her. She had yellow eyes. When they caught the sunlight, they gleamed like two golden coins. Arya had named her after the warrior queen of the Rhoyne, who had led her people across the narrow sea. That had been a great scandal too. Sansa, of course, had named her pup ââ¬Å"Lady.â⬠Arya made a face and hugged the wolfling tight. Nymeria licked her ear, and she giggled. By now Septa Mordane would certainly have sent word to her lady mother. If she went to her room, they would find her. Arya did not care to be found. She had a better notion. The boys were at practice in the yard. She wanted to see Robb put gallant Prince Joffrey flat on his back. ââ¬Å"Come,â⬠she whispered to Nymeria. She got up and ran, the wolf coming hard at her heels. There was a window in the covered bridge between the armory and the Great Keep where you had a view of the whole yard. That was where they headed. They arrived, flushed and breathless, to find Jon seated on the sill, one leg drawn up languidly to his chin. He was watching the action, so absorbed that he seemed unaware of her approach until his white wolf moved to meet them. Nymeria stalked closer on wary feet. Ghost, already larger than his litter mates, smelled her, gave her ear a careful nip, and settled back down. Jon gave her a curious look. ââ¬Å"Shouldnââ¬â¢t you be working on your stitches, little sister?â⬠Arya made a face at him. ââ¬Å"I wanted to see them fight.â⬠He smiled. ââ¬Å"Come here, then.â⬠Arya climbed up on the window and sat beside him, to a chorus of thuds and grunts from the yard below. To her disappointment, it was the younger boys drilling. Bran was so heavily padded he looked as though he had belted on a featherbed, and Prince Tommen, who was plump to begin with, seemed positively round. They were huffing and puffing and hitting at each other with padded wooden swords under the watchful eye of old Ser Rodrik Cassel, the master-at-arms, a great stout keg of a man with magnificent white cheek whiskers. A dozen spectators, man and boy, were calling out encouragement, Robbââ¬â¢s voice the loudest among them. She spotted Theon Greyjoy beside him, his black doublet emblazoned with the golden kraken of his House, a look of wry contempt on his face. Both of the combatants were staggering. Arya judged that they had been at it awhile. ââ¬Å"A shade more exhausting than needlework,â⬠Jon observed. ââ¬Å"A shade more fun than needlework,â⬠Arya gave back at him. Jon grinned, reached over, and messed up her hair. Arya flushed. They had always been close. Jon had their fatherââ¬â¢s face, as she did. They were the only ones. Robb and Sansa and Bran and even little Rickon all took after the Tullys, with easy smiles and fire in their hair. When Arya had been little, she had been afraid that meant that she was a bastard too. It been Jon she had gone to in her fear, and Jon who had reassured her. ââ¬Å"Why arenââ¬â¢t you down in the yard?â⬠Arya asked him. He gave her a half smile. ââ¬Å"Bastards are not allowed to damage young princes,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Any bruises they take in the practice yard must come from trueborn swords.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠Arya felt abashed. She should have realized. For the second time today, Arya reflected that life was not fair. She watched her little brother whack at Tommen. ââ¬Å"I could do just as good as Bran,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s only seven. Iââ¬â¢m nine.â⬠Jon looked her over with all his fourteen-year-old wisdom. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re too skinny,â⬠he said. He took her arm to feel her muscle. Then he sighed and shook his head. ââ¬Å"I doubt you could even lift a longsword, little sister, never mind swing one.â⬠Arya snatched back her arm and glared at him. Jon messed up her hair again. They watched Bran and Tommen circle each other. ââ¬Å"You see Prince Joffrey?â⬠Jon asked. She hadnââ¬â¢t, not at first glance, but when she looked again she found him to the back, under the shade of the high stone wall. He was surrounded by men she did not recognize, young squires in the livery of Lannister and Baratheon, strangers all. There were a few older men among them; knights, she surmised. ââ¬Å"Look at the arms on his surcoat,â⬠Jon suggested. Arya looked. An ornate shield had been embroidered on the princeââ¬â¢s padded surcoat. No doubt the needlework was exquisite. The arms were pided down the middle; on one side was the crowned stag of the royal House, on the other the lion of Lannister. ââ¬Å"The Lannisters are proud,â⬠Jon observed. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢d think the royal sigil would be sufficient, but no. He makes his motherââ¬â¢s House equal in honor to the kingââ¬â¢s.â⬠ââ¬Å"The woman is important too!â⬠Arya protested. Jon chuckled. ââ¬Å"Perhaps you should do the same thing, little sister. Wed Tully to Stark in your arms.â⬠ââ¬Å"A wolf with a fish in its mouth?â⬠It made her laugh. ââ¬Å"That would look silly. Besides, if a girl canââ¬â¢t fight, why should she have a coat of arms?â⬠Jon shrugged. ââ¬Å"Girls get the arms but not the swords. Bastards get the swords but not the arms. I did not make the rules, little sister.â⬠There was a shout from the courtyard below. Prince Tommen was rolling in the dust, trying to get up and failing. All the padding made him look like a turtle on its back. Bran was standing over him with upraised wooden sword, ready to whack him again once he regained his feet. The men began to laugh. ââ¬Å"Enough!â⬠Ser Rodrik called out. He gave the prince a hand and yanked him back to his feet. ââ¬Å"Well fought. Lew, Donnis, help them out of their armor.â⬠He looked around. ââ¬Å"Prince Joffrey, Robb, will you go another round?â⬠Robb, already sweaty from a previous bout, moved forward eagerly. ââ¬Å"Gladly.â⬠Joffrey moved into the sunlight in response to Rodrikââ¬â¢s summons. His hair shone like spun gold. He looked bored. ââ¬Å"This is a game for children, Ser Rodrik.â⬠Theon Greyjoy gave a sudden bark of laughter. ââ¬Å"You are children,â⬠he said derisively. ââ¬Å"Robb may be a child,â⬠Joffrey said. ââ¬Å"I am a prince. And I grow tired of swatting at Starks with a play sword.â⬠ââ¬Å"You got more swats than you gave, Joff,â⬠Robb said. ââ¬Å"Are you afraid?â⬠Prince Joffrey looked at him. ââ¬Å"Oh, terrified,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re so much older.â⬠Some of the Lannister men laughed. Jon looked down on the scene with a frown. ââ¬Å"Joffrey is truly a little shit,â⬠he told Arya. Ser Rodrik tugged thoughtfully at his white whiskers. ââ¬Å"What are you suggesting?â⬠he asked the prince. ââ¬Å"Live steel.â⬠ââ¬Å"Done,â⬠Robb shot back. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ll be sorry!â⬠The master-at-arms put a hand on Robbââ¬â¢s shoulder to quiet him. ââ¬Å"Live steel is too dangerous. I will permit you tourney swords, with blunted edges.â⬠Joffrey said nothing, but a man strange to Arya, a tall knight with black hair and burn scars on his face, pushed forward in front of the prince. ââ¬Å"This is your prince. Who are you to tell him he may not have an edge on his sword, ser?â⬠ââ¬Å"Master-at-arms of Winterfell, Clegane, and you would do well not to forget it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you training women here?â⬠the burned man wanted to know. He was muscled like a bull. ââ¬Å"I am training knights,â⬠Ser Rodrik said pointedly. ââ¬Å"They will have steel when they are ready. When they are of an age.â⬠The burned man looked at Robb. ââ¬Å"How old are you, boy?â⬠ââ¬Å"Fourteen,â⬠Robb said. ââ¬Å"I killed a man at twelve. You can be sure it was not with a blunt sword.â⬠Arya could see Robb bristle. His pride was wounded. He turned on Ser Rodrik. ââ¬Å"Let me do it. I can beat him.â⬠ââ¬Å"Beat him with a tourney blade, then,â⬠Ser Rodrik said. Joffrey shrugged. ââ¬Å"Come and see me when youââ¬â¢re older, Stark. If youââ¬â¢re not too old.â⬠There was laughter from the Lannister men. Robbââ¬â¢s curses rang through the yard. Arya covered her mouth in shock. Theon Greyjoy seized Robbââ¬â¢s arm to keep him away from the prince. Ser Rodrik tugged at his whiskers in dismay. Joffrey feigned a yawn and turned to his younger brother. ââ¬Å"Come, Tommen,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"The hour of play is done. Leave the children to their frolics.â⬠That brought more laughter from the Lannisters, more curses from Robb. Ser Rodrikââ¬â¢s face was beet-red with fury under the white of his whiskers. Theon kept Robb locked in an iron grip until the princes and their party were safely away. Jon watched them leave, and Arya watched Jon. His face had grown as still as the pool at the heart of the godswood. Finally he climbed down off the window. ââ¬Å"The show is done,â⬠he said. He bent to scratch Ghost behind the ears. The white wolf rose and rubbed against him. ââ¬Å"You had best run back to your room, little sister. Septa Mordane will surely be lurking. The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. Youââ¬â¢ll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers.â⬠Arya didnââ¬â¢t think it was funny. ââ¬Å"I hate needlework!â⬠she said with passion. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not fair!â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing is fair,â⬠Jon said. He messed up her hair again and walked away from her, Ghost moving silently beside him. Nymeria started to follow too, then stopped and came back when she saw that Arya was not coming. Reluctantly she turned in the other direction. It was worse than Jon had thought. It wasnââ¬â¢t Septa Mordane waiting in her room. It was Septa Mordane and her mother. Belonging can be defined as the process of the association with the human race as socially active characters. It is part of the human condition which represents the need for security, safety and acceptance. An aspect of belonging such as isolation can be associated with the concept of belonging, as not belonging is a reciprocal process of belonging. Belonging allows for the authentication of characters through the formation of identity and connections. Belonging is the human need for wellbeing, acceptance and social security. One belongs to a group, a family, a unit, and one can also be isolated from groups and rejected from communities.Through analysis of The Crucible by Arthur Miller and the feature article, A Dangerous mind offers an insight into the concept of belonging as it is presented and substantiated through the use of literary devices. In The Crucible, belonging is explored through a theme of persecution, whereby one must conform to the rules of society in order to belong. We will write a custom essay sample on The Crucible with Related Text or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The alternative is ali/enation and displacement. The central aspects of reputation and empowerment are explored through a variety of literary techniques. Millerââ¬â¢s use of juxtaposition highlights characters and emphasises upon their social faction. Danforthââ¬â¢s ultimatum, ââ¬Å"A person is either with this court or must be courted, there is no road betweenâ⬠conveys the two juxtaposing positions in the society, whereby one either belongs or does not. The contrast here lies in the divide between individuality and social conformity. This is portrayed by Abigailââ¬â¢s calling of Proctor as the ââ¬Å"devilââ¬â¢s manâ⬠who put knowledge in my heart. â⬠clearly trying to label Proctor as an outsider, as well as the characterisation of John Proctor as a non-conformist through his desperate rejection of the labels society places upon him.He cries, ââ¬Å"It is my name! I cannot have another in my lifeâ⬠¦ leave me my name! â⬠Conveying that his name and is his individuality of which the society is attempting to strip from him. Without it, he is nothing. Proctorââ¬â¢s counterpart is Abigail, a girl who was characterised by her isolation and displacement from majority of Salem. She has no power, possession, belonging, or respect. She is an outcast who desires to belong as shown by Miller through the emotionally charged plea of Abigail ââ¬Å"I am a good girl, a proper girl! She made me do it! . It is with great dramatic irony that the same child whom attains belonging by accusing others would ask Danforth ââ¬Å"Let you beware Mr Danforth. Think you be so mighty that the power of hell may not turn your wits? â⬠This is demonstrating both dramatic and verbal irony of her actions and the establishments of her ignorance. On the other hand Danforth is the personified symbol of rigid social bonds. He calls out to Goody Nurse ââ¬Å"Do you know who I am? Mrs. Nurseâ⬠showcasing how his place in society calls for respect and power. His statement of oppressive power over those who belong to his address is further reflected in his parable ââ¬Å"Hang them high over the town, who weeps for these, weeps for corruption. â⬠Suggesting that his power holds hostage over the belonging of those who may rebel, thus showing the power of belonging in creating identities and the human need for acceptance and security. The Crucible is a reflection of how society treats those who belong and those who do not, and the community of Salem echoes the obsession with prejudgment in todayââ¬â¢s societies, thus resulting in a characters tendency to either belong or not belong. The text that reflects these notions of belonging is the feature article, A Dangerous Mind, by Robert Wainwright and Paola Totaro. The text details the issues of Martin Bryant, a psychotic teenager whose life of rejection and isolation was ultimately resulted in the Port Arthur Massacre. A series of historical rhetorical events ââ¬Å"enrolment at school o nly sparked a cycle of rejection and isolationâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ and ââ¬Å"Kids understood automatically that he was someone to stay away fromâ⬠conveyed his inability to belong. The story utilises a juxtaposition of two periods of his life. In the past despite his isolation, he had a loving mother, a supporting father, and lastly a romantic relationship with an older woman who loved him. ââ¬Å"Under the constant care and vigil of Maurice and Helenâ⬠¦ his years passed uneventfully. â⬠However his family and romantic connections were separated as his parents passed away. Martinââ¬â¢s isolation is metaphorically described as ââ¬Å"His loss was completeâ⬠¦ he was without a rudder and a moral compassâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . The last days before Martin committed the worst massacre in Australian history is described through the simile. ââ¬Å"He was like a Labrador puppyâ⬠¦ always trying to impress somebody. The text strongly specifies the power of belonging and the importance of acceptance and family. Martinââ¬â¢s actions are not different to those of Abigail because he is a victim of conformity. As a result, he commits something terrible as revenge and as a way to draw attention to himself. These two texts have demonstrated to the responder the concept of belonging and its aspects such as isolation and not belonging through a variety of devices and techniques. These allow the responder to practically connect and enable us to satisfy the human condition of belonging.
